Horfield C needed a win against Cabot A in order to secure a top two finish in division 2 but with Cabot fighting to remain in the division it looked like being a tricky fixture.
However, by 9:30 Matias, Prakash and Tom had already won and the match was all but over. Prakash managed to equalize as black reasonably easily and got a slightly better position. His opponent made some tactical errors and lost his queen to a bishop and knight.
The rest (about 5 moves) needed to be careful ones but the win was quickly achieved.
Tom’s opponent tried to play aggressive but soon became undone and Tom continued his recent good form with another win.
By 10pm Rob was well on his way to a win with a strong queen side attack. This proved unstoppable and the game was his. By 10:20 Mike had managed to get his queen and rook onto the eight rank and with some very clever moves under time pressure, forced the win.
Bob had gone a rook down with just the queens and a couple of pawns remaining in the end game. Despite a gallant effort he finally was forced to exchange queens and the game was over giving Horfield the 5-1 victory and a promotion spot in division 2.
