Title heartbreak for Horfield C as they have to settle for second in Division 2 (24/04/18)

The last game of the season and Horfield ‘C’ were already guaranteed at least 2nd place. With this in mind and knowing that Clevedon ‘B’ at the top of the table were likely to field a very strong team in their final match, we stuck with the same team that did so well during the year. Downend ‘C’ had been struggling all season and had to call up a couple of ‘D’ team players, so early on the prospects looked promising. Mike’s position became blocked up and with no obvious way through a draw was agreed. Rob’s opponent made a mistake which Rob quickly capitalised on and claimed the win. However, things quickly started to go down hill and both Prakash and Tom lost on the lower boards. The pressure was now on Matias and Bob. Both had a slight advantage. Matias was a pawn up in the end game with his opponent in time trouble, but he was not able to hang on to the past pawn and his opponents knight was causing all sorts of problems. After a missed check where Matias lost his rook for the knight a draw was agreed. It was down to Bob to try and at least draw the match, but he was unable to find the moves to break down Dave’s defence and again a draw was agreed giving Downend ‘C’ a 3.5-2.5 victory.

(1) Mike Levene 0.5 – 0.5 Ian Pickup

(2) Matias Perez 0.5 – 0.5 Andrew Munn

(5) Prakash Chatterjee 0 – 1 James Hennefeld

(6) Thomas Holmes 0 – 1 Nigel Wilcox
