Two matches this week. Two wins.

The B team were comfortable winners against Bath C. Wins for Andy, Nigel and both the Mikes. University A team are clear at the top of division 2 but only a point separates second from sixth after 4 matches. Scorecard here.

The F team were also at home against UWE B and extended their unbeaten record and lead at the top of division 7. Match card here and report from Siobhan below:

Alex’s match was tough and the longest of the night. Giving away 300 rating points to James, he put up a good fight but fell behind a piece, then, trying to find some tactics gave up another piece but it wasn’t to be.

On board 2 Tom had a short, dynamic game where he sacrificed a piece to keep black’s king in the centre. White’s rapid development was too much for Izzy’s defence, and a bishop check with the king stuck between queen and rook, and white pieces was enough to end the game after 16 moves.

On board 3 Martin faced the Nimzo-Larsen and opted to simply develop in a logical way. In the middlegame black had a major kingside attack with both bishops, queen, and knight involved. all pointing across. It forced Evalyn’s king into a vulnerable position and a final tactic saw him win a rook and white resigned on move 29.

Finally, on board 4 Siobhan and Parthib exchanged down into a level rook and knight endgame. Black launched his kingside pawns but white was well organised and managed to get two pawns ahead into an endgame with just four knights. Siobhan dropped one of her two pawns and the players agreed a draw to give us the match win.
